For a fun twist, you can also head up to a nearby parking garage for elevated city views and skyline shots. Duke Gardens in Durham, NC is one of my favorite spots for engagement and family photos. The gardens are stunning year-round, with spring blooms and beautiful natural light making it especially magical. A permit and fee ($150 for a golden hour session) are required, but it’s worth it for the incredible backdrops. Duke Gardens also hosts weddings, making it a versatile and elegant location for all kinds of celebrations.

Dorothea Dix Park – A massive park known for skyline views and the WRAL Festival of Lights. Summer sunflowers and wide open spaces provide endless photo opportunities, with sunrise or golden hour offering the best light. Also, has a great skyline view of downtown!
JC Raulston Arboretum – Perfect for year-round beauty and intimate sessions, with rose gardens, flower beds, a zen garden, and a gazebo. My favorite spot is the back rows of flowering plants under a large willow tree that glows beautifully in photos.
College Campuses – Raleigh and surrounding campuses like NC State, Meredith College, Duke University, and UNC Chapel Hill are popular for couples who want to honor their history. Be mindful of busy times like graduation season and any photography permits required.
Beaches – Coastal NC offers incredible options for engagement photos, from Wilmington to the Outer Banks. Sunrise or sunset along the shore provides romantic lighting, crashing waves, and wide open sand for stunning images.
